Tiny Core Logo The Tiny Core development team has announced the arrival of version 4.0 of its minimal Linux distribution. As with previous versions, the new release brings improvements to the underlying system and several updates to the included packages.

Tiny Core 4.0 is based on the 3.0.3 Linux kernel, and includes a new search method for both AppBrowser and AppBrowser shell (ab). Package updates include version 1.19.2 of the BusyBox tool collection, udev 173 and version 1.41.14 of the e2fsprogs filesystem utilities. The GNU C Library (GLIBC) has been replaced with version 2.13 of the Embedded GLIBC (EGLIBC) variant and the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) libraries have been updated to 4.6.1. (more…)

Networked Help Desk The new NetworkedHelpDesk.org initiative has been formed to create an open standard for communicating between various project management, customer relationship management (CRM) or customer support solutions across multiple partners, suppliers or departments.

Currently, many organisations use disparate systems for these tasks. The new open standards organisation is intended to provide a uniform way to connect these systems for “seamless collaboration” in order to “deliver an awesome customer experience”. NetworkedHelpDesk.org is currently working to develop and deliver an open application programming interface (API) that will allow organisations to deliver improved support to their customers across a number of products and systems. El fundador de Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth, ha asegurado que existe “una posibilidad real” de que las futuras versiones de Ubuntu cuenten con Google Chrome como navegador por defecto en lugar de Firefox.

Shuttleworth se ha declarado un gran “fan” del navegador de Google y ha reconocido que pensaron incluirlo en la nueva versión Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, aunque finalmente decidieron seguir con Firefox.

Al parecer, Chrome tampoco sustituirá al navegador de Mozilla en la siguiente versión Ubuntu 12.04 cuyo lanzamiento está programado para abril del año que viene, pero a partir de esta entrega el cambio de navegador es algo que entra dentro de los planes de Shuttleworth y del equipo de desarrollo de esta distribución Linux. Asus ha anunciado el lanzamiento de tres nuevos netbooks de la gama Eee PC que llevarán Ubuntu 10.10 como sistema operativo por defecto.

Se trata de los modelos Eee PC 1001PXD, 1011PX y 1015PX, que llevarán la popular distribución de Linux instalada por defecto, aunque no será su versión más reciente 11.04 Natty Narwhal sino la 10.10.

Estos nuevos equipos saldrán a la venta durante este mes, aunque no la compañía no ha confirmado aún precios ni países de comercialización. Lo que sí han dejado claro es que apuestan por Ubuntu, e incluso han anunciado que lanzarán más equipos con la distribución Linux durante este año.

“Ubuntu es un sistema operativo de código abierto conocido por su capacidad de personalización y estabilidad”, explica el director de producto de la compañía Stanley Chang, que está convencido de que “la alianza estratégica con Ubuntu es una cooperación que nos reportará un beneficio mutuo”. Businesses are becoming more confident about deploying open-source technology within the enterprise, instead of relegating it to the fringes or for experimental projects, according to a recent survey.

A significant majority of surveyed respondents, or 95 percent, said their organizations are using open-source technology to avoid vendor lock-in, according to the Future of Open Source Survey released May 16. In previous years, the chief reason driving open-source adoption was lowered software costs.

“Multiple factors are driving the increased adoption of open-source software, including freedom from vendor lock-in, greater flexibility and lower cost,” said Matt Aslett, senior analyst of enterprise software at The 451 Group. (more…)

El creador del kernel de Linux ha puesto un debate sobre la mesa al proponer un cambio en la numeración 2.6 que se lleva utilizando durante los últimos seis años.

Linus Torvalds ha expresado su preocupación a través de un mensaje publicado en las lista de correo del kernel Linux en el que asegura que el kernel 2.6 se está yendo de las manos ya que tiene un gran número de actualizaciones para sus distintas versiones.

En este sentido, plantea la posibilidad de acabar con esta numeración para pasar a la siguiente, que podría ser el kernel 2.8 ya que muchos creen que el cambio a una numeración 3.0 aún no es apropiado ya que no se han incorporado novedades tan notables como para dar ese salto. (more…)

CORPORATE LINUX VENDOR Red Hat has released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.1 with numerous security updates and patches.

Red Hat released its popular RHEL 6 distribution back in November 2010 and typically the firm operates on a six month update schedule for current release tracks. So it is no big surprise that Red Hat has announced RHEL 6.1 in May, which brings out patches and security fixes and, according to Red Hat, maintains application compatibility and certification. Zaragoza ha sido la ciudad elegida para la celebración del primer congreso de software libre en el trabajo autónomo, en el que se ha elaborado un decálogo que recoge los beneficios de la plataforma open source en este tipo de trabajo.

El primero y principal es el ahorro en la adquisición, mantenimiento y renovación de tecnologías, un aspecto fundamental para los trabajadores por cuenta propia. (more…)

Tal y como estaba previsto en el roadmap de Canonical, la primera versión beta de Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) ha sido liberada hace algunas horas.

Entre las novedades de esta versión de prueba hay que destacar el Kernel 2.6.38, Gnome en versión 2.32.1 ya que la versión 3 aún no ha sido lanzada.

La beta de Ubuntu 11.04 incluye LibreOffice 3.3.2 como suite de ofimática en lugar de OpenOffice, tal y como había anunciado Canonical y el exitoso Firefox 4 como navegador.

El responsable de Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth, ha anunciado a través de su blog que la próxima versión de la popular distribución de Linux Ubuntu 11.10 se llamará “Oneiric Ocelot”.

Traducido al castellano, este nombre significa “ocelote onírico”, que hace referencia por un lado a un animal, el ocelote, un felino al parecer muy abundante en el continente americano y por otro se refiere al mundo de los sueños con el adjetivo onírico.

Shuttleworth explica que la combinación de los dos términos elegidos para bautizar la próxima versión de Ubuntu le recuerda a “la forma en la que ocurre la innovación: parte soñar despierto y parte disciplina”.

Según señala Shuttleworth, el objetivo al elegir este nombre es reflejar la forma en la que Canonical desarrolla Ubuntu y la esencia de su trabajo. (more…)

The Yocto Project, a working group of the Linux Foundation, is likely something most of you have never heard of. It’s “an open source collaboration project that provides templates, tools and methods to help you create custom Linux-based systems for embedded products regardless of the hardware architecture.” The Yocto Project has been compatible with OpenEmbedded, “the build framework for embedded Linux,” and today comes the announcement that Yocto is aligning more closely with OpenEmbedded, including shared governance. openSUSE Logo Seemingly skipping the first release candidate, the openSUSE project developers have announced the arrival of a second release candidate (RC2) for version 11.4 of the openSUSE Linux distribution. The final version of openSUSE 11.4 is due to be released in March – a full openSUSE 11.4 Timeline is available from suse.de.

As is normal at this stage of development, the developers have focused on addressing bugs found in the previous development versions, noting that after a recent Bug Squashing day corrected 132 problems, only a “few serious issues remain”. Improvements to the ‘backend’ include tweaks to Wi-Fi supplicant and drivers, as well as “a host of small fixes across the distribution which enhance stability and performance”. Other changes include various package updates, work on the transition from OpenOffice.org to LibreOffice and finishing touches to KDE SC 4.6. (more…)

Red Hat has released version 4.9 of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution for corporate customers. The list of new features in the release notes (HTML, PDF PDF) is rather short, as RHEL 4 is currently in the second phase of the RHEL life cycle, in which the distributor will only make security corrections and other minor changes. Components such as new hardware drivers will only be added if no major effort is required to do so – for instance, in the new RHEL 4 release the distributor updated the micro code that corrects certain flaws in Intel processors. The developers also extended the support of Xeon CPUs in Oprofile, and Firefox was bumped up to the current version 3.6.13. (more…)
