Apache Feather The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has announced the 15th anniversary of its open-source HTTP web server. The popular Apache HTTP Web Server, the ASF’s first project, first began on the 23rd of February 1994, when several patch authors joined the “new-httpd” mailing list to discuss the future of the NCSA httpd fork and chose the Apache name. The first release, Apache server 1.0, arrived in December of 1995 and was followed by version 1.3 just four years later. (more…)

PC-BSD Logo The PC-BSD developers have announced the availability of version 8.0, the “Hubble Eidtion”, of their open source operating system. The long running case of Jacobsen v. Katzer has been settled on terms favourable to Jacobsen, a developer of the Java Model Railroad Interface project. The case came about when Katzer incorporated Jacobsen’s code into it’s proprietary model trail software, after deleting the copyright notices that existed in the code. (more…)

MWC 2010 Moblin and Maemo, and Qt too

INTEL AND NOKIA have joined forces, combining the Moblin and Maemo to create Meego, a new Linux based, open source operating system and developer platform for mobile devices.

Speaking at an event across the road from the Mobile World Congress, the two companies revealed that they will be merging their respective open source operating systems to create a single new interface designed to be used on a variety of devices including smartphones, netbooks, tablets, connected TVs and even in-car navigation and entertainment systems. La adopción de software de inteligencia de negocio (BI- Business Intelligence) open source se duplicará cada año debido a que tales productos son ya considerados por las empresas como lo “suficientemente buenos” para aplicaciones rutinarias, según Gartner.

En opinión de Andreas Bittener, analista de Gartner, los suministradores de software de inteligencia de negocio comercial ofrecen todavía una tecnología de BI superior a los productos de código abierto, pero éste está convirtiéndose poco a poco en una alternativa apta para los requerimientos rutinarios de Business Intelligence. El acuerdo tecnológico permite la creación de una solución única para las agencias gubernamentales

Pentaho Corporation (www.pentaho.com), compañía proveedora de soluciones de Business Intelligence de código abierto, ha firmado un acuerdo tecnológico con jAPS, una empresa especializada también en open source, bajo el cual proporcionarán aplicaciones de información para el gobierno italiano. A través de la integración entre jAPS y Pentaho, el gobierno italiano podrá tomar ventaja de las soluciones integrales de BI y con ello hacer accesible la información para todas las personas, incluyendo a aquellas con discapacidades.

Two research reports outline the drivers of growth for open-source business intelligence — and what customers can expect as the market matures.

Business intelligence (BI) is going to open up over the next few years, according to two recently released reports. open-source technology, that is — .

“Venture capital flooding into open-source start-ups over the past several years resulted in an explosion of enterprise-ready tools and applications,” writes Mark Madsen, industry expert and president of Third Nature in one of the reports, “Open Source Solutions: Managing, Analyzing, and Delivering Business Information.” The report, published by BEyeNetwork, contains the results of Madsen’s survey of more than 1,000 information technology professionals. About one-third of the respondents claim to have deployed open-source software for reporting, data integration, or database analytics purposes, and more than a third say they plan to evaluate open-source for analytics in the near term. Only 12 percent of respondents say they have no plans to look into open-source BI. (more…)

En noviembre de 2009 Google Chrome se subía por primera vez al podium de los navegadores web más usados, adelantando a un Safari que, aunque también gana usuarios, lo hace con menos facilidad, a pesar de ser el único navegador del Iphone y de tener disponible una versión para Windows.
