From the concept of copyleft to the status of community projects, free and open source software (FOSS) raises endless legal issues, many of which are subject to rumors and misconceptions floating around the community. To help reduce the confusion for those managing software projects, the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) has released a freely distributable guide entitled “A Legal Issues Primer for Open Source and Free Software Projects.” Although only 45 pages long — shorter if you don’t count the front matter — the primer still manages to provide a highly structured introduction to these issues that carefully outlines options and is full of practical advice. (more…)

Today a new feedback site is launched at brainstorm.ubuntu.com that will make it easier for users of Ubuntu to suggests ideas for improvements. Voting makes it clear which ideas have the most support in the user community and should be given priority. We have of course been inspired by the IdeaStorm site from our good friends at Dell but modified the concept to fit our needs.
The development team can now take the pulse on the most pressing user issues and propose the ideas as topics at the Ubuntu Development Summits and ultimately as specifications. Ubuntu development is in turn driven by detailed specifications written up in the wiki and tracked as blueprints in Launchpad.

Last month the Parsix Linux distribution made its 1.0 release after almost a year of development. Parsix is a GNOME-based distro based on the testing branch of Debian GNU/Linux with elements from Kanotix. It makes an attractive alternative to Ubuntu.
Parsix comes as an installable live CD and features GNOME 2.20.3 as the desktop. It hails from Persia, but the language and keyboard default to en_US. When you first boot the live CD, Parsix provides two handy boot options for wide-screen display resolutions. Many distros auto-detect the optimal resolution, but many don’t. This approach is a great compromise, and assured that I was able to boot into my desired resolution. (more…)

ligeramente superior.

Sun said Tuesday that it has completed the purchase of MySQL for $1 billion and CEO Jonathan Schwartz indicated the company plans to keep shopping for open source acquisitions.
“Open source is really in the DNA of Sun,” said Schwartz on a conference call to trumpet MySQL as a transforming acquisition. Schwartz also added that Sun was “looking forward to more tuck in acquisitions on the open source front.”
Schwartz wasn’t going to name what companies were on his acquisition list, but he did outline some key attributes. Open source companies with “high integrity” communities, broad distribution and some commercial success would be fine tuck in acquisitions. “We believe we’re a natural home for a lot of them,” said Schwartz.
