El pasado 18 de septiembre tuvo lugar en la localidad de Jerez de los Caballeros el primero de los cuatro Talleres Linex Pyme:”Software Libre para Empresa”, que se celebrarán en la región extremeña, y en el que participaron más de 30 empresarios y otros agentes sociales de la localidad y comarca.

El taller, de dos horas de duración, estaba orientado a empresarios y trabajadores del pequeño y mediano comercio, asesorías, consultorías, empresas de servicios, hostelería, etc., interesadas en conocer e incorporar herramientas de gestión informática en su  operativa diaria, así como a emprendedores, agentes y entidades implicadas en el desarrollo  rural.
El objetivo de estos talleres es fomentar el uso de tecnologías informáticas en la empresa, y para ello dos empresarios de la localidad, un usuario de Linex Pyme y un proveedor de productos y servicios informáticos, han contado a los asistentes su experiencia y las ventajas de este tipo de software libre.

El Principado de Asturias ha anunciado su voluntad de impulsar la creación de una comunidad para el desarrollo de software libre en las administraciones asturianas.
La iniciativa es fruto de la reciente reunión que mantuvieron el viceconsejero de Modernización y Recursos Humanos, Luis Manuel Iturrioz, y la secretaria general de la Fundación CENATIC (Centro Nacional de Aplicación de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación), Cristina Grau, en la que se acordaron la liberación de las fuentes y de las más de 150 aplicaciones del Framework, es decir, de la estructura para el diseño, implementación y mantenimiento de la aplicaciones de las administraciones del Principado basada en la tecnología Java/J2EE. En este sentido, Iturrioz invitó a los miembros de la comunidad de desarrollo del software libre a participar en la creación de las futuras aplicaciones.

Para ello, el Principado llevará a cabo reuniones de lanzamiento que contarán con la participación de la Universidad de Oviedo, la asociación Asturlinux y el Cluster TIC de Asturias y CENATIC, entre otros. Con ésta última, el gobierno de Asturias anunció también su entrada al Patronato de la Fundación con el objetivo de impulsar el software libre.

El Gobierno regional, a través del Centro de Excelencia de Software Libre de Castilla-La Mancha (CESLCAM), ha lanzado el Primer Concurso Universitario de Software Libre de Castilla-La Mancha.

Esta iniciativa pretende promover en el mundo universitario el desarrollo del software libre con el fin de introducir al mayor número de alumnos en el mismo para que adquieran experiencia en un modelo cada vez más demandado en el entorno laboral, así como formar a profesionales que respondan a la creciente demanda de este tipo de software que hay en la sociedad.

Para ello, el CESLCAM ha organizado este concurso junto al Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Albacete y la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) a través de la Escuela Superior de Informática de Ciudad Real y la Escuela Politécnica Superior de Albacete.

IBM JOINS OPENOFFICE.ORG COMMUNITY

The OpenOffice.org community today announced that IBM will be joining the community to collaborate on the development of OpenOffice.org software. IBM will be making initial code contributions that it has been developing as part of its Lotus Notes product, including accessibility enhancements, and will be making ongoing contributions to the feature richness and code quality of OpenOffice.org. Besides working with the community on the free productivity suite’s software, IBM will also leverage OpenOffice.org technology in its products.

La compañía aérea ha confiado en Red Hat por su compromiso con la interoperabilidad y la fiabilidad de su tecnología

Red Hat (NASDAQ: RHAT), el proveedor líder mundial de soluciones de código abierto para la empresa, anuncia que Spanair, una de las mayores compañías aéreas españolas con vuelos a los principales puntos del mundo, ha elegido Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) como plataforma en varias de sus iniciativas de TI.

Spanair está empleando el sistema operativo Linux para dos proyectos. Por una parte, para la gestión de las tripulaciones, la planificación de la flota y la programación de los horarios, la compañía aérea utiliza el software de optimización de tripulaciones Carmen, en que están implicados tres servidores RHELRH. La plataforma Red Hat también es utilizada en varias estaciones de optimización, que reciben información del servidor central para ejecutar los diferentes procesos. Por otra, la compañía dispone de un servidor de base de datos Oracle 10GR2 sobre servidores HP Proliant que corren sobre una plataforma RHEL, y donde actualmente está funcionando el datawarehouse.

Va a ser, sin lugar a dudas, una de las noticias más impactantes, importantes y comentadas durante los próximos meses, ya que pone fin a un litigio que duraba desde hacía más de cuatro años y que ha impactado a toda la comunidad informática aunque especialmente a la de GNU/Linux

Se acaban cuatro años de incertidumbre sobre los derechos de propiedad intelectual de parte del código fuente del núcleo Linux, ya que pese a que este final estaba casi cantado, el juicio no ha dejado de poner nerviosa a la comunidad linuxera.

El Ministerio de Educación Francés ha migrado 2.500 servidores a lo largo de sus 30 delegaciones de educación a Red Hat Enterprise Linux. La decisión se tomó de acuerdo con la estrategia del ministerio de invertir en soluciones open source con el objetivo de liberarse de las restricciones asociadas a los proveedores y al software propietarios.

El Ministerio de Educación Francés ha estado sujeto durante un largo tiempo a las soluciones de sus proveedores a través del uso, por parte de éstos, de estándares propietarios para software y hardware. Con el fin de evitar los costes crecientes asociados a las licencias propietarias y los ciclos de actualizaciones impuestos, el Ministerio Francés de Educación decidió migrar a soluciones de software y hardware basadas en estándares open source, asegurando la interoperabilidad y la independencia del proveedor para sus sistemas de TI.

ATI R500 Linux Performance

Since Linux support for the Radeon X1000 “R500″ series was introduced some 17 months ago, there has been a performance imbalance. The past fglrx drivers have worked, but they’ve had a difficult time competing with the competition presented by NVIDIA and their Linux driver when it comes to the frame-rate performance. Though as we have been sharing in all of our articles today, the new ATI/AMD Linux driver will be made available in the coming days and it offers some striking performance improvements. In our Mobility Radeon X300 testing, the new driver allowed Doom 3 and Quake 4 to run at playable frame-rates, which simply wasn’t possible with the previous 8.40.4 fglrx driver a month ago! The Radeon X800XL performance was also improved significantly, which allowed it to outperform the NVIDIA competition. Now onto the Radeon X1000 family, as you can probably suspect, there are massive performance improvements to be found with these graphics cards as well. In this article we have tested the Radeon X1300PRO, X1800XL, X1800XT, and X1950PRO with the new ATI Linux driver and have found significant performance improvements.

For testing the R500 and R600 series with the new driver we had used the same system. The setup consisted of dual Intel Xeon E5320 “Clovertown” processors, 4GB of DDR2 FB-DIMM RAM, Tyan Tempest i5000XT motherboard, OCZ ModXStream 780W PSU, and a Seagate 7200.9 300GB HDD. Like our R300/400 tests, we had used Fedora 7 with the Linux 2.6.22.4 kernel and X server 1.3. The Radeon X1300PRO, X1800XL, X1800XT, and X1950PRO were all PCI Express x16 based and each had 256MB of video memory. No NVIDIA comparisons were done in this article, but you can find the X1800XT and X1950PRO in our R600 series article with comparison to NVIDIA’s GeForce 8 series. Additional benchmarks will be published in the coming days and weeks.
